What does root canal treatment involve?
-
1
To begin, we administer local anaesthetic to numb the affected area of your mouth and ensure you don’t feel any pain during treatment.
-
2
We place a rubber sheet around your tooth to keep it dry before drilling a small hole to allow access to the root canal system.
-
3
We remove all of the infected pulp and flush the canals with an antibacterial solution to thoroughly clean them of all infection and bacteria.
-
4
Using tiny instruments, we shape the root canals before washing them again. They are then filled and sealed to prevent further infection.
-
5
At your subsequent appointment, we check your tooth, making sure all infection has cleared. It is then permanently filled and covered with a crown for a beautifully natural-looking finish.

When is root canal treatment needed?
The dental pulp within your tooth is made up of soft tissue, including nerves and blood vessels, and extends from the crown to the tips of the root. If the pulp becomes infected, due to decay, trauma, or a deep filling, it needs to be removed to avoid the issue spreading and to save your natural tooth. You may experience symptoms including pain, sensitivity, discolouration, swelling, a metallic taste or gum tenderness.

The best way to care for your tooth is with a consistent routine of brushing and flossing. Even after root canal treatment, the tooth can still be susceptible to decay, so it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene.
