We see many nervous patients in Sheffield, so if you’re worried about coming to the dentist, don’t be embarrassed. Around one in four people in the UK are scared of the dentist, perhaps due to negative experiences in the past or because they are embarrassed about their teeth. Sometimes there’s no real reason for patients to feel nervous; they are just worried it’s going to hurt.

    Our tips for nervous patients

We encourage nervous patients to come to us, as we understand just how difficult it can be to pluck up the courage for a visit to the dentist. We will treat you with respect and dignity and will take things at your pace to ensure you are comfortable with the treatment you are receiving. Here are our top tips for anxious patients to make your visit to the dentist more bearable:

    • Book an early appointment: It’s best to have an early morning visit if you’re anxious, as this will avoid you worrying all day about it.
    • Talk to your dentist: Tell your dentist if you feel nervous; it will help them take things slowly with you.
    • Check up first: We’ll just do a basic check up on your first visit – no drilling, no needles – to get you used to being in the chair again.
    • Bring a friend: You are always welcome to have a friend or family member with you for support in the clinic.
    • Start small: We recommend you start with a scale and polish, working up to more advanced treatments as you gain in confidence.
    • Agree a sign: Agree a signal that you want treatment to stop so that you’re in control of the appointment.
    • Bring music: Some nervous patients like to bring their own headphones with music or an audiobook to keep them calm while receiving treatment.

Even though you might feel like putting the dentist off, it’s never a good idea to ignore your regular check-ups. This could mean you require more invasive procedures which will only put you off coming again!
